The Election of 1860 Explained

The Election of 1860 was the product of years of sectionalism growing in America. As four candidates were nominated to run for President all with different views on how to handle the dangerous issue of slavery. The outcome of the election leads to secession by Southern states and eventually Civil War. Questions below:

#5: Southerners for decades had been trying to reinforce and spread slavery throughout the country, as had been seen with the compromises and eventually Scott vs. Sandford. This combined with a rising radicalization of secessionist beliefs, fear of slave uprisings, and a growing political identity of southern Democrats. Whatever Lincoln's actual words were it was already in the public consciousness that his victory would mean the end of slavery, so when he did win the only remaining options were (in their beliefs) accept abolition or separate.

The irony here being that secession and the inevitable war it cased created a self-fulfilling prophecy that left southern lands destroyed and abolition a reality under Lincoln's presidency.

Answer:5. They feel like Abraham Lincoln is going to get rid of slavery and it also made them feel like the federal government was taking over because they got a president that they didn’t even vote for.
