What’s The India-U.S. Relationship Based On - Interests Or Values?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the U.S. has received unprecedented coverage in recent times. Watched by adversaries and friends alike, the trip led to a further strengthening of U.S.-India relations.

The relationship between the world’s largest and the oldest democracy is increasingly becoming a multi-faceted one over the last few years. Closer than ever before, India and U.S. will now cooperate in areas which have remained unexplored so far including jet engines, semiconductors, and space among others.

And this has led to some arguing that the ongoing bonhomie between the two nations is based on an alignment of interests and not on values like commitment to democracy, protection of minority rights, freedom of expression etc.

Watch, as United States Institute of Peace senior advisor Dr. Daniel Markey who focuses on US policy in South Asia speaks to Abhishek Singh about the significance of PM Modi’s state visit, the transition in the U.S.-India relationship over the years, and why the U.S. and India should focus more on shared interests than on values.

If the U.S. is involved it is purely interests of the regime occupying the White House, not humanity.

Some people elect two people and ask all the people in the country to vote either of these two people and there's no other choice for the people. This is not democracy. Lol

As an American with many Indian colleagues and friends, I just want to say that we love and respect India. I hope that a lasting, strong relationship can be forged between our two nations.

We can't forget Henry Kissinger words: 'America hasn't permanent friends or enemies, only lasting interests' & 'being an enemy of US can be dangerous but being a friend is fatal'...

Lol I really have tried to see the US-India in a new and hopeful light but i think we keep hitting bogged down in the details. I suggest we stop this drama about shared values and stick to our shared interests.

I'm from the US & work with a lot of people from India. We laugh at the same things, kid around with each others. One of my friends from India likes beer, he has to hide it when his family comes to visit. Another one had an arranged marriage which he had the final choice on. In the US you are allowed to have your own values, as long as you aren't infringing on other peoples values it's okay. If you come up to me and say "You should be vegan it's hurting animals" that's fine. You can't come up to me and say "I'm going to kill you if you don't go Vegan". Hope that helps some.

Maybe India doesn't see democracy as the US does.
Such a pretentious statement, typically American.

Why do I keep hearing the word ‘arrogance’ popping up in my mind? Perhaps in need of a western apology?
