What’s The India-U.S. Relationship Based On - Interests Or Values?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the U.S. has received unprecedented coverage in recent times. Watched by adversaries and friends alike, the trip led to a further strengthening of U.S.-India relations.

The relationship between the world’s largest and the oldest democracy is increasingly becoming a multi-faceted one over the last few years. Closer than ever before, India and U.S. will now cooperate in areas which have remained unexplored so far including jet engines, semiconductors, and space among others.

And this has led to some arguing that the ongoing bonhomie between the two nations is based on an alignment of interests and not on values like commitment to democracy, protection of minority rights, freedom of expression etc.

I'm from the US & work with a lot of people from India. We laugh at the same things, kid around with each others. One of my friends from India likes beer, he has to hide it when his family comes to visit. Another one had an arranged marriage which he had the final choice on. In the US you are allowed to have your own values, as long as you aren't infringing on other peoples values it's okay. If you come up to me and say "You should be vegan it's hurting animals" that's fine. You can't come up to me and say "I'm going to kill you if you don't go Vegan". Hope that helps some.
