When people talk about the future of health care, some extol the promise of bioscience to cure the most deadly diseases. Others may discuss nanotechnologies that enable instant feedback on a person's condition. But what about the actual delivery of health care--in hospitals, doctors' offices and, more and more, patients' homes? Is today's health-care system adequate for today's needs? Much of our current approach is based on a 20th century model in which patients were subordinate to their physicians and care was dispensed in doctors' offices. But we're moving toward a system in which care is the result of a team effort between more sophisticated consumers and professionals; in which technology allows information about illness, treatment options and care to be provided much more efficiently; and in which patients can link up electronically with their records and consult with physicians from the comfort of their living rooms. This panel of experts will focus on 21st century advances in health-care delivery and how we can enhance the quality of life for patients and their families.
