What is a Pinlock visor and how does it work?
When it starts to get colder you will quickly notice by the fogged up visor of your helmet. There is nothing more irritating than having to open your visor on a cold morning whilst riding, to catch a glimpse of what’s actually going on in front of you on the road. This is all well and good for as long as it lasts, because you will have teary eyes from the cold within a matter of minutes.
There is a solution for this problem: it’s called a Pinlock anti-fog lens. This is a small flexible visor which can be fitted on the inside of the helmet visor. This creates a double glazing effect, which significantly decreases the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside of the visor. This way, a foggy visor is a thing of the past.

Thanks for the bit about adjusting the pinlock. Lost my instructions. Had forgotten you could adjust that. My visor was coming up at the bottom and letting in fog. The trick allowed for a seal. Appreciate that detail.

Hi Richie, just to add, the visor is made of a very flexible material. So instead of forcing the pinlock to fit into the other pin, will just degrade it and may deform the gaps where it fits in the pins while trying to install or remove it. Instead, just bend the visor a bit towards the outside, so you only need to put in minimal effort to push the pinlock lens into the correct position.

Thanks for the vid mate. Very helpful. But, ya might wanna take off the protective film first, before breathing on it to see if it works... 😂 👍🏻

I didn't know the pins were inserted from the outer face of the shield. It would be good to mention that in the otherwise stellar instructional video.

The trouble is, a quick breath on the visor to check for fogging comes nowhere near the real world experience of riding in the pissing down rain. I've owned 4 helmets over the years with pinlock inserts fitted - 2 Shoeis and 2 Arais - and without exception they all fogged up between the insert and visor when riding in the rain. Adjusting the fiddly pins made no difference, and demisting a visor fogged up in this way is a right bastard. Why the hell they can't come factory sealed to the visor I don't know.

3:08 you put the visor down silicone strip facing down so could collect dust from Pinlock packaging

It worked nicely originally but last year I found that the pin lock lens now has this weird vein like structure on it.

I installed the product on my visor. It went well. Thank-You. Question: Once installed, should/can I leave it on permanently? Or rather, should it be removed when the warm weather returns?

Hello Richie. Thanks for another very informative video. I’m just now looking up information I previously didn’t need to know, as I lived in a hot country. I have a Shoei RAID II, which came with a Pinlock insert which I just recently installed (I’m now living in England). I found 2 problems with this Pinlock. 1. It is not even close to the size of the visor, so the top bead is right in front of my eyes. 2. When I go very slowly, or stop, in cold weather, my visor still fogs up a lot, resulting in having to open the visor.
Is this perhaps common only to the older Shoei’s and their Pinlocks? Ive had my Raid II for about 7 years (and don’t know the actual year of manufacture), but it’s not had a great deal of use, about 8000Km over about 4 years in South Africa, and now only a couple of hundred miles over the last few months in England.
I realise that I’m replying to an old video posting, so I don’t know if you’ll even see this post, but I hope that you do, and that you’ll reply. Many thanks, in anticipation and hope.

Is pinlock len not recommended to be worn at night? Or it is depends on riders?

It’s not that simple, when the pin lock moves and you have a little gap in there you whole visor fogs up and trust me to get to fill that little gap so air don’t get inside is a hustle, if you have short fuse and gets very angry easy I recommend you not to try to fix it other wise you end up breaking your whole help, that’s how pissed off I got trying to fix my one, luckily I didn’t break my helmet but I had thoughts 😂
