He got remarried and had a daughter. He was an old man, he wanted to retire in peace. Fans are selfish. They wanted George to give his remaining years to making Star Wars for them. His religion teaches about letting go. It's what the prequel was about. Possessiveness.

As sad as it is that he wound up selling his company anyway, in the end he was justified in doing so.
His name was tarnished, none of his company's new projects where succeeding or getting off the ground, none of his children were interested in inheriting the leadership of said company, and he was pushing 70 yet expected to do the same things he did back when he was in his 30s.'
If anyone one is to blame for what's happening to Star Wars now, it's the inheritors themselves.

George Lucas wanted to protect his work and leave the ownership, rights and bureaucracy to another company when he felt that he needed to spend his remaining years with his family instead of spending 10 years making new Star Wars films.

Perhaps he couldn't foresee the bag (💰) the 'house of mouse' would eventually throw him.

Well, money talks, he got a great amount for it, and with time moving on, he can look back and easily say that he did his job (mission accomplished) sadly, Star Wars has come to an end. Anything SW related after Rise Of Skywalker (whether directed by Disney, or Lucas himself) does not matter WHICH direction it goes. Darth Vader gone, Han Solo, Leia, Luke as a force ghost and the droids. And to think I’ve been a huge die hard fan since Kindergarten

Should've sold it to a young lad who meant well.

Perhaps he realized sooner or later someone was going to sell that company. He didn’t want to spend the remainder of his days working himself into the grave so that his widow or one of his kids whoever it is, he would leave everything to in his will would have somebody drive a semi truck full of money up to their house and say so here you go just sign this right there on the X saying that you transfer ownership of Star Wars and ILM to our company at least this way, he’s the one the check was made out to he recognized that intellectual property of Star Wars was going to go on with or without him And that he did not necessarily have to be the one to keep cranking these out for the rest of his life, let someone else do the rest of the heavylifting. It can’t be said that he didn’t leave a legacy Why not enjoy some downtime with his remaining years he earned it. He’s given a lot to the world.

Jokes on Disney, you’ll always see Lucas Production at the start of every movie. They can’t own that 😂

sooner or later everyone gets old and has to decide whether to go in style or with dementia and diapers. Lucas made it clear: I want to take care of my employees and the future of my company. that he made a contract with fraudsters is a separate matter.

Thanks to Marcia for finally confirming what we've always known: George Luca$ was always about shamelessly selling his soul (and eventually the company) for massive amounts of cash instead of aspiring to being considered an artistic cinema visionary with integrity.

Because his contemporaries at the time of "Star Wars", like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma, and even Spielberg had already achieved success by telling difficult, multi-layered, thought-provoking and insightful dramatic films that, to this day, are considered cinema classics that completely changed filmmaking -- each in their own unique fashion. They achieved iconic status not motivated by greed, but by sheer passion and talent for the art of filmmaking. That love still continues to this day, well into old age for most of them...

(To be continued...)

He may well regret selling up, but I totally get why he did so. As he said, he was looking at another 10 years of doing another trilogy. At that stage in his life, he wanted to stop and enjoy life. Plus, he'd been absolutely battered with criticism for the prequels, so going through all that again wasn't exactly an exciting proposition. Maybe handing over the reins to one of his kids would have been a better compromise, but I have no idea if any of them are into this line of work.
