WHY EXAMS can make it MORE DIFFICULT to learn ENGLISH! - B2/C1 Advanced Cambridge Advice

We associate taking exams with progress, and view scoring highly in exams as evidence of achievement. Neither of these things are necessarily false. HOWEVER, the way we study for exams is different to how we learn languages. Using language is inherently communicative, while any examination with objective criteria is inherently about being right. As a result English learners may be handicapping themselves by focusing overwhelmingly on exam preparation instead of exploration, experimentation and communication. This is not to say do not take exams. DO take exams, but remember that English is more than an exam, and that exam preparation is only a small part of your learning.

You must be right Toby. However C1 certificate in English is required when you want to get to the doctoral studies in many countries. But I can see that passing exam and practical knowledge may be two separated things. According to my English teacher I am reasonably well prepared for the speaking part of CAE. On the other side, I still feel anxious when someone suddenly asks me about something in English. Something not related to expected exam topics.
I decided that after passing CAE, I will focus on practical language.

I've been thinking about this topic lately and I do agree with you. No matter how the score will be like, it's about enhancing and learning English with fun everyday, step by step, in order to be able to use this WONDERFUL language in real life situation! To be completely honest, I will be taking FCE in April, not only 'cause i wanna prove myself i can do this, but also 'cause I do think certificates are important in a world like this ; anyway, although i'm not 100% sure i'll pass it, i want to try, as my motto is : 'better an oops than a what if' .
