Tory leadership candidates confirmed

Eight MPs have all reached the required threshold and are through to the first round of the secret ballot for the Tory leadership contest which will be held on Wednesday.

They are former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the Foreign secretary Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat, Penny Mordaunt, the current chancellor Nadim Zahawi, Kemi Baedoch, Suella Braverman and Jeremy Hunt.

They all must now secure the support of at least 30 of the 358 Conservative MPs.

Meanwhile Sajid Javid and Rehman Chishti both pulled out just before the announcement by Sir Graham Brady.

The flaw in British political system is that the PM can be elected by MPs and not the general electorate. I mean the direct voice of the masses is needed when choosing leaders and not the voice of the delegates who often have their own agenda.
