'Glee' Cast Slam Lea Michele Behavior On Set

Lea Michele 'Glee' cast members react to her behavior on set including Heather Morris, Samantha Marie Ware, Naya Rivera & more.
Lea Michele’s behavior on the Glee set has been both praised and slammed by her costars over the years. The actress starred as Rachel Berry on the fan-favorite FOX drama for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. While her character was famously the New Directions glee club’s resident diva, it appeared that her onscreen personality allegedly reared its ugly head when the cameras stopped rolling.
Let's start with some of the more positive comments. Jonathan Groff, who played Jesse St. James on Glee, was once a love interest for Lea Michele's character Rachel Berry. Jonathan told Teen Vogue in 2014 “I have a connection with Lea that I don’t have with anyone else in my life and don’t think I ever will...I think we have a very specific relationship.” Brief and vague.
Lea's costar Darren Criss was a little more vocal about his friendship with Lea as the two not only acted together, but also toured together. On Ellen, Darren spoke about Lea saying, "Lea and I have had a lot of fun the past few years...We’ve always played music together and every time we do, we’re like, ‘We should do this more and take this to more cities.’”
Now to rougher waters. In a 2012 interview with Marie Claire, Lea denied rumors claiming she was a diva on the set of Glee, but nearly a decade later a handful of the cast would begin to open up about their experience with her.
Lea faced backlash for how she acted on Glee in June 2020 after Samantha Marie Ware, who played Jane Hayward during the show’s sixth season, accused the singer of making her time on the series “a living hell.”
After Lea tweeted about George Floyd, Samantha quote tweeted her and alleged that THE singer made her first opportunity on TV a 'living hell'. Samantha also alleged Lea made micro aggressions against her. Dabier Snell added to Samantha's statements about Lea in a tweet saying she wouldn't allow him to sit on a table with other cast-mates because he 'didn't belong there'.
Lea responded to the claims in a lengthy statement on Instagram saying she's sorry for her behavior and she would grow and be better in the future.
Heather Morris also responded to accusations of Lea's negative behavior on-set. On the “Everything Iconic With Danny Pellegrino” podcast in May 2021, Heather Morris alleged that Michele’s on-set behavior was “hush-hush” among the cast. Heather claimed she and other witnesses could have stepped up and gone to Fox executives about the behavior, but they were very scared at the time.
The late Naya Rivera also spoke out about Lea on her 2016 memoir, 'Sorry Not Sorry', claiming Lea didn't like sharing the spotlight and that she had a hard time separating their work from their friendship. Naya also added, “It seemed like she blamed me for anything and everything that went wrong. If I’d complained about anyone or anything, she assumed I was bitching about her. Soon she started to ignore me, and eventually it got to the point where she didn’t say a word to me for all of season six.”
Some other co-stars may have been indifferent or even defended their relationship with Lea. Matthew Morrison, who played Will Schuester in Glee, addressed the controversy surrounding her alleged behavior in a June 2020 radio interview, saying, “I honestly think it’s a distraction of the bigger issues that are going on right now. It’s kind of like, ‘Ah.’ You want to be a good, pleasant person to be around. That’s about all I’m going to say on that.”
