The black blob is for protection but not from what you think. You see under that epoxy is a bare silicon die glued to the board and directly wired to board. All though this is expensive to set up machinery but cheeper in the long run.

From its construction the black blob is a megadrive on a chip. The video encoder is a rgb or composite to HDMI. I'm thinking hdmi. The big header is a cartridge port too im guessing.

almost impossible to expose that epoxy blob without damaging the board itself. i hate epoxy blob!!
