NASA has released a stunning image of the Milky Way-sized spiral galaxy NGC 3256 captured by the James Webb Space Telescope.

NGC 3256 is located in the constellation Vela, approximately 131 million light-years away.

This galaxy, also known as ESO 263-38, LEDA 30785, or IRAS 10257-4338, is about the same size as the Milky Way and is part of the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster complex.

NGC 3256 is a remnant of a collision between two smaller spiral galaxies that occurred approximately 500 million years ago.

The extended luminous tails that sprawl out around the galaxy bear the marks of its turbulent past.
