Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise following Iran's recent attack on Israel, with world leaders responding over the weekend with condemnation and calls for de-escalation. The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, the European Commission and G7 leaders have all demanded that Iran cease attacks completely.
"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a UN Security Council meeting.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the bloc's unwavering commitment to Israel's security and announced that further discussions would take place on additional sanctions against Iran after the "unprecedented" attack, specifically on its drone and missile programs.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also confirmed that British military jets shot down drones launched by Iran and emphasized the need for calm to prevail, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada “unequivocally condemns” Iran’s attacks and that "we stand with Israel."
Jordan's Prime Minister has warned that against any escalation could lead to "dangerous paths," and Germany has expressed its full solidarity with Israel.
