HOMESCHOOL MATH CURRICULUM FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL | Pick the Best Math Curriculum for Your Teen

Today I'm sharing what I have learned about 7 popular math programs for pre-algebra and above in the homeschool world. My daughter will be starting pre-algebra next school year and I want to pick something that will work well for her as she finished up her middle school math and enters into high school.

Since I was researching for myself, I decided to share all that I learned with you! Hopefully it's helpful to all of you who are trying to figure this out for your own homeschools.

We just started using Denision Math about a month ago. So far, I really like the way he teaches and the set-up. I like that he works out every problem with them, that it has a book that the problems need to be written down in and he teaches them to circle their answers. Other online math, my kids have a tendency to try to solve all the problems in their head while Denision has you get in the habit of writing everything down. We used Nicole the Math Lady with Saxon the last two years. Although she does a great job explaining the lessons and I love the automatic grading, the lessons were long, and my kids complained about it. We did Teaching Texbooks for two years prior to Saxon, and I didn't feel they were retaining what they learned

I used Mr D math with my 8th grader for pre-algebra. The content prepared him well for algebra 1. However, we had some issues with teacher support... I found the assistant to be rather snarky. I personally emailed him myself one time after an especially snarky reply to my son asking for help. We didn't go back bc of that.

This video was SO very helpful, thank you! You saved us from our math frustrations and for that I am eternally grateful :) My middle-schooler has struggled with math and pre-algebra has been the bane of our existence! He has ADD and forgets a lot of what he learns, which really bums him out and gives him anxiety about math. Denison Math looks like the right fit and I can't wait to start it with him!! Thanks again.

We started our homeschool journey 11 years ago using Math Mammoth. Then switched to The Good and the Beautiful. We recently switched to Saxon using the My Math Assistant program(like NTML) and it has been amazing! I plan to have them do Shormann for high school.

This is an excellent comparison, thank you!! I’d love to hear more as you go along about what your daughter chose and how it is going. I was considering a couple of these as well and have it narrowed down to AoPS or Thinkwell for prealgebra.

I found your channel on a Facebook page, and am so so grateful for finding it. This has been the best math curriculum video that I have found yet. I can’t wait to dive more into your channel ❤

My daughter hated Saxon so we tried CTC math. It did not have enough review built in. We switched to teaching textbooks. My daughter tested at mid 10th grade when she was in 8th on a standardized test. She likes it.

One of my kids goes to public school and when he switched to this school from a charter he switched from Saxon to Everyday Mathematics. The principle stated vehemently that Saxon is behind.

We have been using CTC Math and Saxon. We have a couple of more years before we will need pre-algebra. Thanks for sharing all of these different options. God bless ❤

I also have a child who dislikes maths. We are using Masterbooks Principles of Mathematics 1 at the moment and so far it is going well. There is an academy course that goes with it. We did the trial lessons and it was very good. The videos were about 10 minutes and covered what was in the text. For some reason my daughter decided not to have the videos. It has saved money and it seems to be fine without videos so far. But maybe for POM 2 we will use the videos. The books are about $60 and the academy course is about $60 so not as expensive as some options. I have also recently found out about Denison Algebra and it looks very good. I will probably seriously look into it for algebra.

This was SO helpful! Thank you! I hadn't heard of Denison Alegebra, but want to look at that one now. My son is not mathy and we have been using Teaching Textbooks, but now I feel I have a better idea of some of the other programs out there.

We did horizon math in the beginning and TT from 3to about 6th grade, but my 7/8th grader really struggled with pre algebra (he does have ADHD and ASD), so we have signed up for CTC math for the whole family this year. At least for my 2 oldest. I will probably keep my youngest in TT this year. We'll see. I loved the idea of Math with Mr. D but it was just too pricey for us :( I also liked unlock math, but it was too much too.

I’ve heard of mr D maths but not looked into it!!! We need self paced courses as well!!! We looked at Saxon for my son but we went with Singapore math as we wanted it to not be too long!!! Shore man sounds awesome as it includes geometry!!! We need life applications with math!!!

I was really looking into Mr. D Math for my daughter but I felt it was so hard to really figure it out haha.

I use ACE Paces math for my oldest. He struggles with math due to ADD. Computer based learning is not a good fit for him. ACE makes it much less overwhelming for him, breaking everything down into very small pieces and has frequent review of previous concepts.

I am surprised that Math-U-see isn't there. We tried Teaching Textbook and CTC math. Although they are very convenient for parents (self-taught and auto-grading), my kids had trouble retaining the information. I have been using Math-U-See for my son (Epsilon last year & pre-algebra this) and used it for my daughter last year (algebra). Math is her weakness, and even Math u see was a struggle, so for geometry, we did Learn Math fast his year. It was okay, but I wished I had taken Denison! Maybe for Algebra 2...
