What is sex reassignment surgery?
Sex reassignment surgery refers to procedures that help people transition to their self-identified gender. Today, many people prefer to use the terms gender affirmation or confirmation surgery.
Adults who are suffering from gender dysphoria may opt for a sex change operation which permanently alters one’s sex to their desired gender identity. This surgical procedure enables a trans person to alter their physical appearance and the existing sexual characteristic into the one of their identified gender.
This procedure has become popular, so much so that many of the public and commercial health insurance plans in countries like Thailand and Brazil provide defined benefits covering such surgeries. The reassignment primarily includes Genital Reconstruction Surgery (MTF and FTM), Chest Reconstruction (FTM), Breast Augmentation (MTF) and Hysterectomy (FTM). Here MTF means Male to Female and FTM means Female to Male.
What Are The Different Types Of Sex Change Surgery?
Sex Reassignment surgery can be broadly divided into 2 kinds:
Male to Female (MTF): Trans women undergo this procedure. The surgeries in this category are aimed at reshaping the male genitalia that is present in these individuals, into a form that resembles female genitalia. It also tries to provide the functionality as far as possible too. The procedures include Hormone Replacement Therapy, Facial Hair Removal, Facial Feminization surgery, Breast Augmentation, etc.
Female to Male (FTM): Trans Men undergo this procedure. Most of these Trans Men do not opt for Genital Reassignment Surgery as the clitoris tissue available to make a viable penile tissue is very less. Also, this procedure seems to have more post-op pain. They opt for the other less extreme options available to them such as Bilateral Mastectomy (removal of breasts), Chest contouring (to provide a male physical shape) and Hysterectomy (removal of internal female genitalia). FTM procedures are also initialized by Hormone Replacement Therapy, which uses Testosterone.
Why is gender affirmation surgery done?
People may have surgery so that their physical body matches their gender identity. People who choose gender affirmation surgery do so because they experience gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is the distress that occurs when your sex assigned at birth does not match your gender identity.
What are the benefits of gender affirmation surgery?
Research has shown that transgender individuals who choose gender-affirming surgery experience long-term mental health benefits. In one study, a person’s odds of needing mental health treatment declined by 8% each year after the gender-affirming procedure.
What are the risks or complications of gender affirmation surgery?
Different procedures carry different risks. For example, individuals who have bottom surgery may have changes to their sexual sensation, or trouble with bladder emptying. In general, significant complications are rare, as long as an experienced surgeon is performing the procedure.
With any surgery, there is a small risk of complications, including:
Bleeding.
Infection.
Side effects of anesthesia.
