MXL V67G Large Capsule Condenser Mic Review / Test

Показать описание
Today I review a Large Capsule Condenser Microphone, the MXL V67G. This mic sounds pretty nice for the price, but it has some harsh higher frequencies. It would be ideal for recording demos but will likely not work well for the majority of voice over, podcast, or let's players.

Buy it on Amazon

If you guys want more examples of how this sounds, I use this mic on most of my videos.

Switched over to this baby after using a USB-mic (a good one too), and it's the best equipment upgrade I've made in the last 5 years in terms of value. I don't agree that it's harsh on the high end - sharp, but not harsh. It might just be the way I have it set up (using PreSonus Studio 2|6 interface), but to me it sounds way fuller and balanced frequency response as long as you use a pop screen during vocal recording. Very low noise floor, too. And to be shallow about it, I really love the "vintage" aesthetic.

MXL has mastered the art of sub-$100 microphones.

I decided to cross over to the dark side and try a condenser microphone instead of my RE20 for my podcast. I just ordered the MXL V67G HE from Amazon for $119. As always nice video! Keep up the great work.

This mic is a gem. I have had great results using these mics on everything from voice over work to drum overheads to vocals and acoustic guitar. It's perfect for just about everything.

I had one of the original v67. Sadly it was stolen along with about 20 others. This Mic didn't come out as a "voiceover" mic, it was meant to be used in the studio. At the time this Mic and the Rode NT1 were in use constantly on many different things and I always got what I wanted. With the right pres, you can get a great vocal, and I never found the high end too harsh. It seemed to be nice without any equipment at all, just good placement for the task at hand. I had great luck with it on female vocals. I think these two mics are just about the best value on the market. Many of these videos about voiceover mics are comparing mics that were designed for the studio, and have been used successfully in that realm. There's an incredible difference between talking and singing. If you want Great voiceover mics look to the people who have been doing that for years before there was such a thing as a podcast, the radio and television announcers. You're not gonna find this Mic there, you'll find RE20s, SM7s, etc. I can show you many studios with these mics right alongside their U87s and 251s.

I bought this mic about 10 years ago and recorded some good quality audio. Unfortunately, just recently I plugged it in and it didn't pick up my voice at all. The only activity I saw on the input level meter was when I tapped on the mic head with my finger. It never left my house as I only needed it for home recording and it's never been dropped or abused in any way. Any suggestions on how to get it recording again? Would it require some skilled soldering or is it hopeless?

I just realized the playlists are organized by price range. Great idea!

Thanks for the review man! I own this mic, but I am considering on getting something more dynamic, since my room isn't treated. That and I'm the type who prefers the "boomy", NPR-style voice.

Any suggestions you have on a dynamic mic for under $100 that has good low end, even with a Scarlett Solo? Or should I invest in a different interface/mixer first that gives me more control over the different frequencies?

Very cool review Sir. I purchased a V67G and it's great for recording my Mesa Boogie 2 x 12 guitar cab. Thanks for the review.
