Synopsis
I hope to present the ideas presented in my recently published book "The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor's Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine"; describing the role that ayahuasca shamanism and spiritual healing techniques play in deep emotional healing, the ways in which deep emotional healing impacts medical diagnoses like anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction and psychosomatic illness; and possible mechanisms for this impact involving psychoneuroimmunologic and epigenetic physiology.

Bio
Joe Tafur, M.D., is a Colombian-American family physician originally from Phoenix, Arizona. After completing his family medicine training at UCLA, Dr. Tafur spent two years in academic research at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry in a lab focused on mind-body medicine. After his research fellowship, over a period of six years, he lived and worked in the Peruvian Amazon at the traditional healing centre Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual. There he worked closely with master Shipibo shaman Ricardo Amaringo and trained in ayahuasca shamanism. In his new book "The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor's Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine," through a series of stories, Dr. Tafur shares his unique experience and integrative medical theories.

An important segment in the talk: "Through the emotion, through our feeling we access the mystical...I can through my emotional body feel into the mystical. But if the emotional body is very clogged up with a lot of baggage I'm going to have a hard time reaching into the mystical. If I don't address that, or if my healthcare system doesn't address the emotional trauma, it is going to be very hard for my culture to find deeper meaning in life, to find inspiration, its gonna seem very flat...that my only option is going to be materialism to try to change the way I feel through money, drugs, or sex...But if I can heal some of that emotional baggage then I'm going to raise my mystical awareness...an extremely common phenomenon [Ayahuasca ceremony]...the atheist that all of a sudden becomes spiritually interested once they go through this release, that was really their broken heart and is why they couldn't feel into that [mystical awareness]".
