White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) ~ known as the European Dipper or just Dipper, is an aquatic passerine bird found in Europe, Middle East, Central Asia & the Indian Subcontinent.... Dippers have evolved a superb ability to hunt underwater......holding their wings outstretched, they stabilize their weight & walk along the bottom of fast running rivers or streams.....Dippers feed on a wide range of aquatic invertebrates & fish....they are found throughout most of Europe & the Middle East - Dippers are named for the bobbing & dipping movements they make whilst perched - they have a distinctive white throat & breast against their dark brown-black plumage.....a flash of their specialised white eyelids, used to protect the eyes when submerged, provides further identification if needed.

American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) ~ known as a Water Ouzel, is a stocky dark grey bird with a head sometimes tinged with brown, & white feathers on the eyelids cause the eyes to flash white as the bird blinks.....a chunky bird of western streams, the American Dipper is North America's only truly aquatic songbird.....it catches all of its food underwater in swiftly flowing streams by swimming & walking on the stream bottom.
