Headwall: Deploying Secure Virtual Command Centers at the Point of Need Using Extended Reality

Traditional command centers provide situational awareness but at a large expense. They have huge physical footprints, involve thorough construction planning, large integration efforts, and massive hardware costs. Even quickly deployable command centers involve assembly efforts and trucks worth of equipment. Headwall is a software application that enables the instantiation of a digital twin of a command center in an Extended Reality (XR) headset. In situations that demand rapid decision making, Headwall enables operators not physically in the command center to benefit from the same level of situational awareness afforded to operators with access to large format video walls. This allows for rapid mobility and scalability, and augments existing 2D workflows with seamless simultaneous visualization of 3D assets. In this talk, we'll be discussing some of the technical challenges and UI/UX design approaches when virtualizing command centers as XR workspaces. Some of the topics we will cover include a) interaction modalities for the operator in XR, b) ideas for GIS data-related workflows, and c) real-world use-cases from our collaborations with federal and industry partners. The talk will also feature a live walkthrough of a Headwall XR command center.
