To make things more complicated, Herc's mom, Alcmene, was the granddaughter of Perseus.... yes the same Perseus who is son of Zeus. So Zeus impersonated a king to bang the king's wife who was his (Zeus) own great-granddaughter.
So if we can say that Herc was both son and great-great-grandson of Zeus.

I'd like to recommend the book "Weight" by Jeanette Winterson, a re-telling of the Herakles and Atlas myth. It's a fairly quick read and really good.

From his name to Hades being the antagonist and everything in-between, it was a Greek Mythology disaster.

They also got Hercules' parentage mostly wrong. Yes Zeus is his father but Hera was NOT his mother and she tried to either kill him and have him killed many times. His mother was the mortal woman in the movie that rased him, even though she WASN'T a shepherds wife but a queen.

The whole movie got his legend and myth wrong. I do hate how they sterilize his life.
