Hey friends! Well, I've finally moved up to the big leagues of mandolin ownership. I've acquired a spectacular Johansson F5 mando, hand-crafted by master luthier Ross Johansson in Alberta, Canada. In this video, I'll talk about why I think this instrument is amazing.

I received my #40 shipment from Ross on December 20th, 2023 and to this date (January 28, 2024) have put 200+ hours on it. I own a couple other quality mandolins, (a 1917 A-1 Gibson and 2007 Eastman 815) agree with the review comments in this video (my mandolin does not have a Virzi) and would not change a thing about my #40 Johansson mandolin. The construction is top drawer as are the materials, design, setup, sound and playability as Ross has refined each of these over time. In my opinion, these mandolins represent tremendous value given the required materials, time and expertise. Also, each of Ross's mandolins are custom builds with very limited total production and represent tremendous value. Thanks Ross!

Congrats, Mike! Great tone. Definitely a massive upgrade. Not a luthier that I know but I'll look after hearing this.

Mr DeJong, wonderful to see you back. (Was wondering about your absences) Very nice mandolin and I'm glad to see you're happy with it. I'd be interested to know the nut width and if there is anything special about the bridge, tuners too. Can't wait for your next tutorial!

Made a re-calculation after posting a comment today regarding my Johansson #40 mandolin and should have stated "100+ hours" rather than "200+ hours". Suffice to say that I am retired and have played this mandolin a great deal.

Hi Mike, I loved the sound so much I bought a Johansson with a virzi from Ross. Playing in a full band with a LR Baggs Radius-M pickup I get so much feedback I had to switch to a solid body :-\ - From reading your comments, it sounds like your K&K Twin / Baggs Para Acoustic DI has done away with feedback? Also, do you use the Screamer as a boost and does it still like an acoustic mando? And thanks for all your videos!

Hi Mike. You’ve had this a few months now. How do you like it? That’s with the virzi and the k&k pickup right? How is the feedback control? Thanks!
