Pelosi literally said in an NYtimes article, "How are you supposed to negotiate with people who don't believe in anything?"

I have a right wing friend I discuss politics with.

95% of our conversations are me coming in with a nuanced approach, offering up concessions on things I may or may not be wrong about and trying to find common ground and then him responding with "HAHAHA YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT?!?!" even on a topic I have overwhelming support for.

Debating conservatives who aren't in the Trump Cult could be worthwhile. Unfortunately, that's like 5% of the Right.

I was on the right and would not have been removed if i did not see your debates.

I’ve had this feeling for a while, I used to watch Vaush’s debates and have them playing in the background for hours on end. The more recent debates, I’ve been clicking off within 10 or so minutes.

I thought this was a case with my tastes changing overtime, but upon rewatching some older debates, I think it is that the right has grown increasingly anti-empiricist to the point where debates don’t even feel worth watching anymore.

Every time i debate a Trump supporter in friendly conversation, i usually get them agreeing with communist talking points within the first hour, until i gently explain that they're communist ideas. That word is really powerful. I've never been able to reach an ordinary conservative, and i think that's because they're too financially stable.

Heard someone say today, "if you want women's rights you're not a republican"

The largest problem with debates now is that politics are far too consolidated. No one who isn't right-wing isn't going to be swaded right. The right isnt grounded in reality and peole who already hold those views probably aren't going to change.

In my opinion, people like Vaush would get more out of debates by arguing with liberals and challenging liberal belief in systems. At least liberals are still somewhat tied to reality and a material critique.

Don’t play chess with pigeons. They don’t understand the rules, they just knock the pieces over, shit on the board and fly back to their flock to claim victory. It’s a waste of time.

I remember a Modern-Day Debate video not too long ago where one of the right wingers was acting like a complete, loudmouthed clown and James was entirely fine with it but then at one point one of the left-leaning ladies said something snappy and James paused the entire debate just to publicly scold her in front of everyone, causing her to cry while the right-winger just continued to dance around like an idiot. I kinda gave up on the format after that one.

Being a conservative has a commitment to illogic and blind defense of the status wuo as prerequisites.

Debate assumes that both sides are coming from a position of good faith. Usually they're just sealioning.

"What is a woman?"

this honestly explains why i always found arguing/discussing sensitive issues with my conservative parents so useless. theres nothing i could do or say to make them even consider my argument in good faith because they dont care about the truth

i remember my dad asking me what i place most important in life (he was expecting god to be the answer) and i said truth because my young agnostic mind saw truth as the highest pursuit even then.

they would rather take their faith than truth, whether its faith in trump or faith in their god (sometimes those are the same things tbf)

Yeah every time I see or even directly try to debate someone on the right at this point, 100% of the time whenever you make a point against them, the gameplan is always to just redirect the conversation to something else.

Like every single time you can try to stay focused on one topic and just try to deconstruct a specific idea, and once they run out of counterarguments, they drop that kind of "Well what is a woman" redirect and completely ignore everything you just said. Its the ultimate form of whataboutism except that they don't even pretend that their redirect has anything to do with what you've said. They just want to shift the topic because that way they dont have to admit that they're wrong. And if you call them out on it they just straight up deny it or project and try to claim that you're the one that was actually shifting the topic.

It's just completely insane. These people have completely rejected reality

I will never forget the first time Vaush stopped doing call-in debates because of parasocial fans pretending to disagree, but then finally did one after chat begged for months and the first and only caller was a parasocial fan pretending to disagree. I really hope that person is proud of themselves.

The sad thing is he's right but once you take on that stance, the other side assumes to have "Won".... which should never be the point of any debate

As a guy who, desperate for debate content, went to see some of Destiny’s latest work with his Jan 6 arc, it is all a septic hellscape. Steven has been pouring over court cases for days so he can debate fluently on Jan 6 and he’s dealing with scum suckers who are just ignoring his points or making shit up. It’s exhausting and disheartening. They don’t care about truth, they only care about power

I'm actually kinda sad to see Vaush figuring this out after I did.
The right has zero desire to learn, change, or admit they were wrong.
