Walls for your ship will help against reduce damage from spend and collisions if I remember correctly. Scan everything. Research everything. I like this series so far. Almost taken out by a cricket...lol.

Fun fact: In Dutch, we actually call a potato "patat" and potatos is "patatten"!

The rotten food can actually be boiled for 15 food per each one. don't stack them when boiling you will only get one out of it. so not worthless but great in a pinch as they do not spoil until after they are cooked again.

I don't mind timers on food but only if there's some sort of way to keep them - maybe you'll unlock something like refrigeration at some point?

A couple of hints, over cooked meals I think are dependent on how close the item is to expiring when it finishes cooking and you do have a flashlight.

You can preserve your foods like the insects you catch. If left on the lure they will last until you pick them up then the timer will start. "F" for flashlight btw.

the food spoiling so fast is probably because of the dust in the air, the food rations and all the fluids stay pure permanently because they are in airtight containers so I'd guess you'll be able to make some kind of food sealer in the future
