TAPELESS VX1000 / SONY HVR-MRC1

How to stop using MiniDV tapes on any camcorder that uses DV out firewire, record directly to CompactFlash cards! Battery life is 4x increased by not using miniDV tapes as no motors are operating, no interlacing as this unit is progressive recording, high resolution at 480p Full DV. Using the Sony HVR-MRC1 is by far the best and most reliable method to go tapeless, the unit also uses the commonly used Sony L series batteries. Super lightweight and easy menu system. The iCradle is needed (note to make sure yours comes with it) which is the HVRA-CR1, this is what makes this whole thing work as it has the Firewire port and battery slot.

5:44 - it records in 480i (720x480 interlaced). DV pixels are rectangular, not square - hence the non-4:3 aspect ratio. People will still to deinterlace for use on modern displays, and refactor it to 4:3. If YouTube is the target delivery, they will also need to upscale to at least 1440x1080 or YouTube's compression scheme will destroy the quality, which would be a shame - since the VX1000 has a spectacular image for SD NTSC video. Great video - I love this idea.

This little device was giving me hell at first. Sometimes it filmed, sometimes it didn't. It was unreliable. Then I got fresh batteries and changed my firewire cable. That was all it needed to start working just the way it was intended. So if you are having issues, try doing the same thing.

Thanks for posting this video, I know someone who does this, with an HVR HD1000U, but with another recording unit. I have the MRC1, but not with the cradle. so I know what to get now. I currently have the Z5U and Z7U, but I want to invest in the older Sony models like this one.

I'm trying to update my Sony MRC1 to firmware V3, but my current firmware version is V2.
I attempted the update using an L-Pro Professionnel Compact Flash UDMA 64GB card, but like in your video, I got a "Format Error" and went through the formatting process.
However, I couldn’t find the "Firmware Update" option in the menu afterward.

I also tried with a Lexar Professional 1066x 32GB CompactFlash UDMA7 card, but got the same result.
Do you think this issue is caused by the CF cards? Or is it because I’m on V2 firmware and not V1?
If it's the latter, is there any way to downgrade to V1?

I hear of people fusing their cameras DV ports when connecting a firewire to it and a computer, while keeping the camera powered on?

Are there any dangers of fusing your DV port while using this recorder?

So when I connect the HVR-MRC1 to the VX1000 turn on the MRC1 first and then the camera
my MRC1 is going to freeze in the moment the camera is turning on. No matter if Camera or VTR.
When I turn the camera off again the MRC1 is not frozen again. Whats the issue there?

I have these components:
SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash 32GB 160MB/s
FireWire Cable IEEE 1394A
FireWire Cable IEEE 1394.
Both cables give the same result.

Great video! Just one question: how do you clear your card after shooting and copying the files? Do you format in the computer or inside the Mrc1 unit? Or do you just delete the files in the pc and clear space for the next recording?
