If I had to name the most important book of the 20th century, it surely would be "The Tin Drum" By Günter Grass. In this video I speak a little about the author and his debut and the most influential book, that changed not only the postwar Germany, but the whole literature world. Enjoy!

I am reading this book at the moment so thank you for helping my understanding of it and the background to it. I saw the film years ago in a small village sharing some films as part of a festival. I very affected by it especially as it rained and the tin roof made such a fierce noise it became very much part of the film. The roof also leaked and the smell of wet wool (it was winter) was overwhelming. Not sure why I have waited so long to read the book but will now finish it with not only my memory of that film but also your helpful comments.

I read it as a 17yr old kid in 1975.
Underwhelmed by the books they made us read at school.
Changed my life.

Thank you for an interesting discussion of the novel. I'd read another of Grass's novels, but I only saw the great film of THE TIN DRUM. It's a film--and a novel I'm sure too-- that sticks in your mind long afterward. But watching it last night I was surprised by some scenes I had not remembered. Del Toro's PINOCCHIO is also highly recommended..after your comments I want to see that again now

Great novel, as are the other books in that series.

I read "The Flounder" and another one of his books but I can't think of its title. It involved an ever evolving army of scare crows. Will you be talking about any other of his works? Thank you for this commentary.

I hope I can find this book here in Morocco ( in a small and marginalized city where I live ) in a reasonable price.

Hello Mike, I’ve just found your channel and am very interested in your perspectives.

May I respectfully help you with an English pronunciation?

Thanks so much! I appreciate you. I read & enjoyed this book in a college course, 1974, called Black Humor And The Grotesque. In English. What do you think of the issue of translation. Is it accurate, or inevitably distorted. Maybe we'll never know

I think it has the greatest opening paragraph in all literature
