Saw that it was 1 ELO, thought it would be fun to see what moves it would play... it stripped my soul away and threw me to the deepest level of hell within just 10 moves.

My gut says Mittens is tuned to leverage weak pieces for more advantage rather than taking them, which is a tactic that Bots don't use often. That's why it sits there forking pieces without taking until you make a decision about which one you value more, and uses that time to shore up other parts of the board. It's a weirdly psychological choice that will probably get slapped by Stockfish.
