How to Put Out a Grease Fire

Показать описание

A grease fire can escalate quickly. Follow these safety steps to douse the flames.

Warning
Grease fires can be very dangerous. Call 911 as soon as you suspect you cannot control the fire.

Step 1: Initiate an evacuation
Turn off the burner and get everybody out of the kitchen. Have your phone at the ready in case you need to call 911.

Step 2: Avoid water
Steer clear of water. Pouring water on burning grease will cause the superheated water to splatter, spreading the fire.

Tip
Do not carry the burning pan outside. The grease will splash and spread the fire.

Step 3: Cover with the lid
Cover the fire with the pan lid. Avoid using glass lids since they can shatter from the heat.

Step 4: Smother with baking soda
Smother the fire with baking soda. This method works if a large amount of baking soda is quickly accessible.

Tip
Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire.

Step 5: Douse with fire extinguisher
Douse the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher. Store a Class B kitchen fire extinguisher within easy reach.

Step 6: Call 911
If the flames aren't out, call 911 immediately and get out of the house.

Did You Know?
Approximately 3,660 people are injured in cooking equipment fires each year.

Never place a fire extinguisher under the sink or in cabinets! You want to place fire extinguishers near a exit because you don't want to get closer to a fire and then turn around and notice fire is in the way or your exit!

THAT IS NOT SAFE

The way she puts the lid on the pan, will make sure the flames 'wave' back at her arms. She should 'slide' it, from the side, onto the pan, away from herself (if she stands on the right side of the pan, move the lid towards the left and slide it onto the pan)

Also, bakingsoda in large amounts...most people don't have that. What she was doing in the video actually causes large flames to get higher up in the air, with the possibility of burning your face off.

So since this has 131.556 views so far...could you guys fix this? Incase people die because of the tips?

Just had one because my wife, decided it was ok to turn the oil on medium and let it sit heating up for 10 minutes while she was breading chicken... It was a huge mess to clean up but at least we still have our house.

Up until last year, I thought that a person should "stop, drop, and roll" when a fire occurs. I guess my preschool teacher didn't specify that the clothes had to be on fire.

My stove burner caught on fire and I put it out by covering the burner with a metal lid. I'm very thankful for videos like this that teach what to do!

Use large pots or pans to suffocate fire OR use a fire blanket and carefully cover fire. Prevent fires by slowing heat oil in pan (prevents grease splattering), don't cook on high heat, reduce heat and cook for an extended period. Use a thermometer to check oil temperature when cooking.

you can also pour gasoline on it, the reaction of oil and gasoline will extinguish the fire immediately

_"Stop drop and role??? I prefer not! Take off your cloths"_
Well, that won't work when your clothes have melted to your skin. Yes, that can and often does happen. It's how people get severely burnt ... so you're best bet is to roll :P
Besides, you'll transfer the heat to the floor, which, unless it too is on fire, will help reduce the chances of bad burns.

as instructed in step 5, i will point a class b fire extinguisher directly into the pan at close range (shown) and pull the trigger. i will then sue you after it splashes burning grease everywhere, burning down the house.

I noticed you said pouring water on the grease fire will spread the fire; you neglected to mention the GIANT FIREBALL that will shoot right up to the ceiling, burning everyone and everything in the immediate area.
Same goes for wax fires.
