In only 2,5 minutes:
- tentation of cowardness (for Scarlett)
- selfishness (Scarlett left alone by Rhett "to the lions")
- group dynamics (sudden silence of Asley's guests)
- black sheep effect (Scarlett, assuming her role)
.... and even more:
- good communication within the long married couple (Scarlett & Rhett)
- "HOW TO..." be a Lady (attitude of Melany) or
.......a Tramp (India & comp ).

One of the most iconic dresses of all times. The costume department was magnificent for this film

Melanie had the most class out of all of them. Loved her the most.

That zoom-in closeup. Gorgeous. She’s hated by almost everyone there and she’s still not going to back down. Vivian Leigh. What an actress.

For those who don’t understand why Melanie defended Scarlett, it’s because she loved her unconditionally. Scarlett of all her female friends was the only one who saved her. Not even Ashley did that. Scarlett single-handedly saved her, her child, and Ashley. She fed them and brought them out of the civil war and even out of the reconstruction era and made them wealthy. Scarlett maybe wasn’t as affectionate as Melanie, I mean she wasn’t affectionate at all. But that’s what I love about her character is that she isn’t all talk at all which is ironic because she is known for her charms. But she shows people that she loves them. She went to the ends of the Earth to ensure the people she loved survived. Melanie was really the only one who understood her and loved her truly. Even Rhett didn’t understand the way she was although he kept boasting to her that he did. I just love their dynamic.

Melly is the real baller in that scene. She always knew that Scarlett was no real threat to her marriage (to her COUSIN, yikes). A true class act.

I’ve watched this scene many times, and just rewatched it and realized something. When Melanie greets Scarlett, as they walk by every woman, Melanie is staring hard at them in the face with a look of defiance that says, “I dare you to say something bad about her.”

Absolute brilliance in this movie.

Melanie was pissed. Not by scarlett, but India's rumors. In the book she and India had quite the disagreement over all this.

Brings tears to my eyes at what a QUEEN Olivia DeHaviland is in this scene. Absolute brilliance. The sheer steel in her gaze as she silently dares any other guest to say anything to Scarlett. She is superb.

Melanie had already "cut" India (the one who saw Scarlett & Ashely and spread the rumors all over town just to create commotion and unnecessary drama for her & Ashey where she knew their love was strong) from the party and when Scarlett shows up to her delight she cements her undying love and loyalty for Scarlett leaving all the people (even Ashley) in awe

Melanie is so good, it makes you want to cry...
She never gives into malice or unkindness, what a role model for us all...

The look on Melanie's face at 1:56 says it all. She'd like to rip Scarlett's heart out, but in a split second, her love for Scarlett takes over and she helps Scarlett face down the entire party. God help any partygoer who said the wrong thing within Melanie's earshot! Most people see the sweet Melanie. I see the steel under the sweetness.

Viven Leigh gets most of praising, and it's clear why. But from 2:00 onwards, Olivia de Havilland is everything I could ask from an actress.

Yes, Melanie had been there that day with a sword in her small hand, ready to do battle for her. And now, as Scarlett looked sadly back, she realized that Melanie had always been there beside her with a sword in her hand, unobtrusive as her own shadow, loving her, fighting for her with blind passionate loyalty, fighting Yankees, fire, hunger, poverty, public opinion and even her beloved blood kin. Scarlett felt her courage and self-confidence ooze from her as she realized that the sword which had flashed between her and the world was sheathed forever."

Rhett is such a mood. Goes ahead and finds the flashiest dress. 'Here and put on plenty of rouge. I want you to look your part tonight.'
