How To Propagate Geraniums, How To Take Geranium Cuttings, Propagating Geranium Plants, Plant Propagation

I love this particular variety of Geranium as it puts on such a good show of flower colour, and they have a really long flowering period. Whilst they are tough plants, Geraniums, will not survive our harsh winters with lots of rain and frost.

Solution, take some cuttings that can overwinter in a more protected position and plant them out in the spring.

Now how do I take my cuttings?

Take cuttings of Geraniums in the morning to ensure the plant stems are well hydrated, for a better success rate.

Tools required:
Clean sharp secateurs or knife,
Suitably sized pot,
Hormone rooting compound,
Compost,

Cut stems just below a leaf joint and strip the lower leaves.
Dip the bottom of the cuttings into hormone rooting compound if you have some.
Make a small hole in the compost.
Insert the cuttings into the compost and firm the compost around the stems to ensure there are no air pockets, and that there is good contact between cutting stems and the compost.
Wait until roots have formed.

Make sure the cuttings do not dry out but do not overwater.
Once the plants have established a good root structure, with roots visible to the base of the pot, then the plants can be potted up Into a larger sized pot or container or be planted out in the Spring.
