Are they Failures or Iterations?

Iterations vs. Failures
•••
Many times we are afraid to even try. Often the fear of failure makes it hard to begin. Even for me, after starting and finishing countless projects, I still have to fight a small battle to get going. I don’t like to lose. I don’t like to invest time in something that might never work. But one thing I’ve learned is no matter what happens, there are always lessons along the way. These lessons, earned one at a time, is what mastery is built upon.

Edison didn't fail 1000 times, he discovered 1000 ways to not make a lightbulb.

Educating people about engineering should always start with iterative design. I see so many engineers upset that their first design isn’t perfect, it’s tough

I totally hear you. I have so many "failed" prints littering my desk from my current project. I'm almost ready to upload it to Printables.

Which is also why Tony Stark kept pretty much all of his armours, they each had their own uses even as many of them became outdated.

Ahhh.... So thaaaat's why big projects take me so freaking long to get to. (-I run through as many iterations as possible in my head first)

🤔

It's always an iteration, provided it doesn't fail when it mustn't.

Well, kinda. If you design something and test it, you usually get some stuff wrong. But most of it is right. Sometimes is works properly, but not optimally. Those I would call “iterations”. But the first one I would call is “fixes”.

The important thing is to not beat yourself up about it, cause it works now.

completely true, test are test, they show you what you can improve upon

I mean—at what point can you start refinement in the process? — When you started doing these gearing mechanisms; how many iterations of your first design have you done compared to your most recent?

What's a failure? Ohh that thing when you give up

Now I understand. Do you have a long video about this process?

Can a similar mechanism produce enough energy to power a small light?

It's like Minecraft development, they always keep EVERY version even the ones that are so glitchy that they are hardly playable

I can apply this to my work. Thank you

Can you teach me how to design perfect gears

As long as you learned something, it isn't a failure. You have to go through the 999 ways not to make a light bulb before you find the one that works.
