While Ubuntu 21.10 isn't being released for another two months, the release schedule for Ubuntu 22.04 has been published that is rather notable in being the next bi-annual long-term support (LTS) release.
The release schedule published today puts the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release as 21 April 2022. That release date isn't really surprising and basically jives with the rhythm and normal release time we've come to expect from Canonical over the better part of the past two decades.
The Ubuntu 22.04 LTS feature freeze is set as 24 February, the UI freeze for 17 March, the beta release on 31 March, and the kernel freeze on 7 April. Again, no real surprises from the dates laid out.
The Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release schedule can be found via the Ubuntu Discourse.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is expected to ship with GNOME 42 (though could be GNOME 41 if diverted, but Van Vugt has already indicated a desire to see GNOME 42 for this LTS release due to planned changes), this will be the first Ubuntu LTS release with Wayland by default, we'll see if Ubuntu's new desktop installer is fully baked and ready to be the default installer for this LTS version, it remains to be seen what sort of OpenZFS support will be provided for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and there will be a whole lot of other updated packages as usual like Mesa 22.0, PHP 8.1, and others.
:: More ::
Canonical follows an almost unalterable hour of route in all its releases. In April and October they launch a new version of their operating system, and immediately after they begin development and tell us what it will be called and when the next one will be released. Almost unalterable, because this time they have changed something, the timing, and they have not waited for to post the release date of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and the rest of the designated days, such as the freezes of functions and the beta.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will be released April 21, 2022. About April 20 and October is when the new versions are released, so in that sense there is no surprise. What is striking is that they have published the JAdjetivo JAnimal roadmap when there are still almost two months to go before the launch of Impish Indri. Will it mean something?
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will be released on April 21, 2022
The truth is that development cannot begin now because the changes are made on the previous version, and that one has not yet been released, but it does seem that Canonical is in a hurry. Whatever the reason, the fact is that they have published the information, and it says the following:
October 21: ISOs will be available.
December 23: testing week (Ubuntu Testing Week).
February 24: freeze of functions.
March 3: testing week.
March 17: UI freeze.
March 24: kernel freeze, functions and documentation
March 28: Beta Freeze and Hardware Enablement.
March 31: beta.
April 7: kernel freeze.
April 14: Final Freeze, Release Candidate.
April 21: launch of the stable version.
As for the novelties, it is expected that you will use GNOME 42, since at some point they have to skip a version to delay GNOME 40 and there is no better time than in an LTS, and we will probably have a new installer. Time to know the news i have, although they have given the launch date ahead of time.
