I got heat stroke. It was diagnosed as severe heat exhaustion. The doctor basically said it was heat stroke but it was too late to evaluate it accurately as I already took a temperate shower and was in a cool environment for hours by that point. Also because I waited too long to seek care. To my credit I felt the worst I've felt in my life physically (saying that as someone who woke up without anesthetic from bone surgery) and was vomiting for two hours straight. My neurological symptoms were difficult to evaluate because my verbal abilities shut down. The brain fog from this event took over a week to mostly resolve if it ever fully did. I'm guessing it didn't as I can't really evaluate whether it did or not 🤔

When in doubt, seek help. Also don't let a cranky ambulance driver drill you for five minutes why you called 911 in 95 degree heat before they bring you in. Just a pro tip?

One thing I noticed was my skin was bright red but I was not sweating or sunburnt. Heat stroke and (I think?) severe heat exhaustion also put you at risk for long-term complications. Like you're not built to be that hot for that long.

My heat related illness, whatever it was, was also related to being associated with the equine industry. Feels like they abuse their help as much as their horses...

Not sure how common it is in equestrian athletes vs. track or football.

But, as a cowgirl .. I recall severe sun burn sickness requiring hospitalization was waaayyy too common with the elite travel schedule.
Also, heat exhaustion and actual heat stroke due to sleeping in trailers and trucks. Myself and a couple others got temps. above 103. And needed 🆘 intervention.

Awareness of how quickly one can happen.
Needs to be more well known by athletes and parents.

Heat exhaustion, then sleep, can easily turn into stroke … in a very short time.

IE: Do not rest if you have heat exhaustion, and reapply sun screen.

Story time! When I was in 5th grade (2000 - 2001, appx 10 yo), my school decided to do track and field.. in August.. where we live in Las Vegas. They had us walk to the closest high school, so none of the adults had a car with them. I wound up fainting on the asphalt where we were doing 100m dashes. Woke up back in the nursing office at the elementary school, so I had been out or incoherent for a good minute while either someone carried me back or had someone drive over to get us (not sure why they didn't use the nursing office of the school we were actually at), and the adults were joking over me about me catching heat stroke. Didn't even get sent home for the day, and rejoined the class when they came back for regular class. Still pisses me off to this day.
