The Sahara Lounge is on the east side of Austin and is a music venue that embodies the city’s weirdness. Topaz and his mom Eileen opened the place in 2011 and it’s more than just a venue, it’s a cultural vortex where all kinds of music and people come together.
The building is from the 60’s and the interior is a mishmash of African art, vintage furniture and colorful tapestries. It’s warm and mystical in here. The decor matches the eclectic music lineup which includes Afrobeat, reggae, blues, funk and country. It’s an up close and personal experience with the performers.
The Sahara Lounge is known for its variety of music and musicians, local and international. Weekly events like African Night with live music and DJs are a staple and draw a diverse crowd. Jam with the Band is where musicians of all levels can join in on spontaneous group performances, it’s Austin’s music culture in a nutshell.
Beyond music the Sahara Lounge is a community hub for events and cultural celebrations, art exhibits, dance performances and film screenings. The full bar with local craft beer and weird cocktails adds to the chill vibe.
