While I question the motives of the people requesting an AI pause, I also think that AI isn't just another toy to treat carelessly. Two things can be true at once, AI can be moving too fast, and there might be jealous people trying to catch up. Their true motives for requesting the pause are irrelevant in front of the real dangers AI might represent.
