As someone with a film degree, these are my guesses:
So much of it doesn’t make sense. The announcement that it had been optioned for turning into a movie was in 2014, the same year the Lego movie came out, so you’d think they’d know that in-game stylized animation is profitable (not to mention artistically better but these decisions rarely get made for that reason :(( ). It had been in development hell, though I don’t know the details, so maybe some part of that is why it got in too deep to change plus all of that was happening pre-2020 when uncanny realism in animation was more accepted. You also have animated kids movies like trolls that made BANK even the emoji movie made SO MUCH money. So it’s not like animation is a deterrent for their target market, and animation is costly, but this movie already costs so so much. I think one of two things is going to happen: either it’s going to rightfully flop and WB can write it off on their taxes as a loss or it’s going to stealthily make a shit load of money from paid VOD sales for offline use on the iPad for kids roadtrips, hotels, airplanes, etc. the box office is not where they’re going to make their money, and imo I think it’s going to flop hard. Either way the artists are going to get shit on and the execs who made abominable decisions are going to make money. It’s been a very insincere story and production, all the way down to the style, and I think studios are finding out the hard way how much better audiences — even young ones — can sniff out the bullshit. This movie would’ve rocked in like 2012, but oh boy for 2024 this is….we live in the bad timeline I think.

Yeah I'm going to agree with Martyn here; I'd rather go see a element animation style movie then what they're doing now. I'm not one for live action stuff myself honestly. For this movie though . . ehhhh idk, love that it's themed around Minecraft but I don't like how it's executed.

I never expected it to be good. I feel like there were only 2 options when it came to making alive action Minecraft movie - make a bad movie, or don't make a movie. That being said, I will be seeing it on opening weekend with my son.

With Jack Black being Steve, it doesn’t feel like he’s THE Steve because it’s live action. Probably just me.
