Toto - Live at Montreux 1991
Live at the Montreux Casino, Switzerland July 5th 1991.

By the time Toto was invited to play the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, their success had already been assured. Having established themselves in the ‘70s as an elite band of session players-turned-chart toppers, they were in the midst of a European tour when the call came. It was an appropriate fit. Not only were they able to spotlight their two most prominent hits of the time -- “Africa” and “Rosanna” -- but they were also allowed to express a more progressive posture that would come with their next album, 1992’s Kingdom of Desire. In short, the band were in peak prowess.

Sadly, this marked one of their final appearances with drummer Jeff Porcaro, who passed away the following year. But as Live at Montreux 1991 demonstrates, the core band - Pocaro, his brother Mike on bass and mainstays, singer/guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboard player keyboardist/vocalist David Paich were in prime form.

Credits:

Drums, Percussion - Jeff Porcaro
Keyboards, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals - David Paich
Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals - Steve Lukather
Percussion - Chris Trujillo
Backing Vocals - Fred White, Jacci McGhee, Jenny Douglas

Lyrics:

You used to be on fire, now you chill me to the bone
We used to fly like angels, now we're sinking like a stone
You say you're trying to help me but that ain't the way it feels
I think you're trying to kill me with those stiletto heels

Paint the town black babe and let that pendulum swing
I've been stabbed in the back babe
And if you don't love me, I'll never feel a thing

And oh, one thing I know, there's only one place left for me to go

Going back to the kingdom of desire
Going down to the valley of the gun
I'm gonna stand too close to the fire
I'm gonna fly too close to the sun

They say the king of love sleeps on a velvet bed
My sheets feel like sandpaper, and my pillow feels like lead
But as sure as Atlantis sank into the sea
I'm sinking like a stone babe, that's how it's got to be

Paint the town black babe and let that pendulum swing
I've been stabbed in the back babe
And if you don't love me, I'll never feel a thing

And oh, if I don't have you, there's only one thing left for me to do

Going back to the kingdom of desire
Going down to the valley of the gun
I'm gonna stand too close to the fire
I'm gonna fly too close to the sun

When you dig up God's little acre, you lose all peace of mind
You stare into the distance, looking for a sign
But that sign it never comes babe, your wishes won't come true
You keep praying for the rain while the sun beats down on you

And oh, one thing I know, there's only one place left for me to go

Going back to the kingdom of desire
Going down to the valley of the gun
I'm gonna stand too close to the fire
I'm gonna fly too close to the sun

Going back to the kingdom of desire
Going down to the valley of the gun
I'm gonna stand too close to the fire
I'm gonna fly too close to the sun

I'm gonna fly too close to the sun, yeah
I'm gonna fly too close to the sun

Man, that bass guitar SLAPS. And I love how Mike always looks like he's having the time of his life. Love it.

Interesting period with Steve Lukather as lead singer. He has always done that quite well.

Never heard this one nor to he prior one before. Love the metal type of sound, i think i recently heard another one where he sounds metal like. I know he always longed to sound a little more hard core. It's awesome 👍😃🌍🌎🌏🌟🌪️🔥🌌🕯️🙏🥁💥⚡🎸⚠️🤘🎹

Such an awesome song ... we'd play it in the old band back then. Nothing like laying down those huge E chords in the second half of the C-section with a huge, unapologetic 90's rig and then break into the solo .... wouldn't be Toto, of course, but damn it was fun ...

Jeff was not a drummer ... he was a musician. Never showing off and he played for the song / music. That's when you can tell somebody is a good "drummer" ;-) .

Steve Lukather looks like Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears) on this period... But, the same way, he's my hero on guitar!

Hi Gerald, may I suggest you to post the video of "without your love" dated back in the 80's?
