NASA’s 3D-printed Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine Test 🔥
Показать описание
NASA has achieved a new benchmark in developing an innovative propulsion system called the Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE). Engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, successfully tested a novel, 3D-printed RDRE for 251 seconds (or longer than four minutes), producing more than 5,800 pounds of thrust.
A rotating detonation engine is a type of propulsion system that utilizes a continuous, rotating detonation wave to efficiently and rapidly combust fuel and oxidizer mixture. This type of engine has the potential to achieve higher thrust-to-weight ratios and increased fuel efficiency compared to traditional combustion engines. The rotating detonation wave is created by igniting a fuel and oxidizer mixture in a continuous, rotating fashion within the engine's combustion chamber. This produces a series of detonation waves that move around the combustion chamber, rapidly burning the fuel mixture and producing high pressure exhaust gases. The potential benefits of this type of engine include reduced emissions and increased performance, but there are also challenges in terms of controlling and maintaining the rotating detonation wave. Research and development are ongoing in order to further explore the potential of rotating detonation engine technology.
