Your content is brilliant. Super technique, flexibility advice, great practical bunkai, technical improvement tips, and all while staying true to traditional shotokan and remaining humble. Inspirational stuff, please keep posting.

Greetings John, I'm a Brazilian in love with shotokan karate and I discovered your YouTube channel. I cannot fail to congratulate you for your great work and dedication to the path of empty hands. Many say that our martial art is weak, but without a doubt they only have the courage to say that because they never crossed their path. You honor the memory of the samurai who created this ancient art. Oss!

This is a valid application tho I would argue that after the block it isn’t holding back the head but grabbing the clothing at the shoulder or near the collar and pulling that towards you.

Not what i was taught, but i love that interpretation of the bunkai

Although this is clearly shotokan karate, these techniques are quite common amongst other styles too. In Shito Ryu, these techniques are used for the opening of Pinan Shodan and for our first Hoki Kumite. So the applications/bunkai may vary depending on the style.

For me it’s “pyung ahn yi Dan”! The applications you show are basic, but incredibly effective. I enjoyed this video. I have never been able to be as crisp and sound in kata. When I was young, I started out in kickboxing and boxing, and I have always felt my strongest point as a martial artist is striking, but I worked very hard at forms. I hope one day I will be as fantastic as you.

Glad to see you showing Kata application in fighting mode because a lot of non martial artist thinks it’s only good for form competition and not applicable in a real fight.
