Not to beat a dead horse

gvwr
Truck 12, 300
Trailer 13, 700

Total 26, 000 which is less than 26, 001

Hope that helps

If your gross combination weight rating (truck (tractor) GVWR + trailer GVWR) is more than 26, 000 you need a CDL regardless of what you weigh

This was actually the easiest video to understand, I'm buying a truck and will need a cattle stock trailer soon and didn't understand how big I could go, now I have a good idea. Thank you mister I enjoy your videos

You nailed it Buddy I have been trying to explain to people for years that it's legal and you know exactly what everyone says and I'm glad someone like you made a video to show it's legal to drive hotshot transporting and NOT HAVE A CDL

I don't understand Connecticut. It says if it is not under 26, 001 combination, it doesn't matter if the trailer is over 10klb on the flowchart. But if you scroll down to the specifications for each class, it says you cannot have a trailer in excess of 10k lb GVWR for class C and B

I finally just bit the bullet and upgraded to 3500 DRW. 28, 000lbs with my 5th wheel or dump trailer (14K Truck, 14K Trailer). I got my normal (personal use) Class A in NC and haven't looked back. It wasn't super difficult and I get the full capacity of the trailers. Pretty neat that your truck trailer combo comes in just under. For those that are above that aren't doing it commercially check with your state, some exclude it and others like NC and TX have class A/B/C equiv in a normal drivers license.

I believe this is the only video that actually explains this

I know this is an old video, but Nevada also has endorsement J which is for trailers over 10, 000 lbs.

These are the actual federal CDL class requirements straight from the FMCSA website:
Class A: Any combination of vehicles which has a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 11, 794 kilograms or more (26, 001 pounds or more) whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 4, 536 kilograms (10, 000 pounds) whichever is greater.

Class B: Any single vehicle which has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 11, 794 or more kilograms (26, 001 pounds or more), or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight that does not exceed 4, 536 kilograms (10, 000 pounds).

Class C: Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under subpart F of 49 CFR Part 172 or is transporting any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR Part 73.

Very often, people will have a truck and trailer properly rated, but they have tires that are not rated for the actual load they are carrying. Or low tire pressure. A good inspector will catch all that.

Perfect. In a world where perfect rarely happens, your video is perfect.
We see this question all the time. Perfect answer. I have a copy of the current Iowa handbook.

P.S. Sorry to make this reply longer. I am a retired accountant (fixed asset accounting for power plants at an electric utility). So, sorry, little tax or small business or lemonade stand (ha ha, in reference to another video of yours on making lemonade out of the lemons you have received in life) operations knowledge. My interest in trucks comes from my father working in administrative jobs for heavy duty truck manufacturers. I read lots of literature and trucking magazines over the past 59 years (starting at age 7). Funny, huh?

Subbed, your videos rock man. They break it down for the dummy in me.
2 questions... Your extra fuel tank, can it be plumbed into the truck main tank and flip a switch to fill it? Or do you need to pull over and use a hand pump (like a gas station pump)
Second question and this may be a whole other video. Getting insurance, I hear it's crazy expensive. How can one start out with a new business and afford to pay this?

I guess this is also the definitive answer to the burning question: "Can I make a decent living as a Hot Shotter without a CDL?" It seems like you are saying, "Yes!"

Awesome. Great info. I'll be asking for a bunch more info in the coming weeks as my potential business partner is weighing his options concerning his current line of work, versus Hot-Shotting.

I know this is an old video. However, I have came across some issues in NC where drivers are getting ticketed for no CDL‘s when the trailer is over 10, 000. I know the CDL handbook states that you do not need one. However, NC General statute states you do in section B.

NY actually means the way its worded you can have a trailer up to 10k lbs and the tow vehicle can be 26k. So actually putting you at 36, 000lbs legally without a cdl. Im pretty sure alot of states are like that
