Last week I asked you about famous works of art that moved you and The execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche housed at the @nationalgallery was one that come up repeatedly.

This painting reimagines the final moments of Lady Jane Grey. Jane was the unwilling Queen of England for 9 days. She is 17 and her arms are outstretched towards the block, her ladies in waiting stand behind her with their neck highlighted, and you are put in the spectators unwilling role of waiting for the axe to strike. It’s a masterpiece of a painting. The first time Mama and I saw it we sat down and just cried.

The light. The way the Masters captured light. Anguish, despair, pain, suffering, transcendence. You can almost feel the touch of that man leading her to the block. The horror she must have felt. Breaks my heart.

The way her ladies-in-waiting turn with despair, raw emotion captured beautifully. I didnt appreciate fine art until discovering these shorts on YouTube.

The hands almost look like a picture, instead of a painting.
It’s beautiful. And emotional ❤

When I was a child, I read the book "Nine Days a Queen" and Ill never forget the last line of the book. I actually think of it every so often. "And then... and then... ohhhh."

Those realist painters were true artists. ANYONE can scribble or splatter or even measure for graphic design... but to capture in perfection every detail, feeling, emotion for the viewer... these are the truest, greatest works of art of all time.

Once you see that painting and know the story you will never forget it. It’s very beautifully painted.

Yes, Queen Mary I did give Lady Jane Grey an opportunity to renounce her claim to the throne before her execution. After Jane was deposed and imprisoned, Mary initially showed some mercy and was hesitant to have her executed. Jane had been used as a pawn by more powerful figures, including John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, and her own parents.Mary tried to save Jane by offering her a chance to convert to Catholicism, which Jane refused. Even then, Mary was reluctant to execute her and delayed the sentence. However, after a Protestant rebellion (Wyatt's Rebellion) in 1554, which aimed to overthrow Mary and reinstate Jane as queen, the situation changed. The rebellion made Jane a symbol of opposition to Mary’s rule, and the Queen felt compelled to sign Jane's death warrant to secure her position and prevent further uprisings. Thus, despite Mary's initial reluctance, the political pressures and the perceived threat led to Jane's execution on February 12, 1554.

When I was in London, I came around the corner, saw this and gasped audibly. Everyone turned to look at me. I do not go to London without visiting this painting. It is my favorite painting of all time, in spite of its terrible subject matter.

This painting is so amazing!
Saw it in person a few weeks ago and the attention to the details is incredible! It really looks real… the fur… the nails… the jewellery! It’s crazy!

I am glad someone on the internet finally got this painting right. I see so many that say it's Catherine Howard.

While imprisoned in the Tower, Jane was attended by ladies in waiting, one of whom was the nursemaid of her infancy. Two ladies in waiting are depicted in the painting, showing their grief at the event which is about to take place.

I love the painting that captured that moment, no matter how many years pass. Rest in peace in heaven. And let's be grateful for the present.

For me the true measure of how skilled the painter is when he/she captures the minute creases and interplay of light and shadow of the dresses worn as it wraps around the body and extremities of the subject/s being painted.
