The Essence Music Festival Recognizes Teen Mathematical Prodigies for Their Groundbreaking Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem

Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson, two high school students from New Orleans, have made waves by demonstrating a novel proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. They were recognized at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans for their work, which challenges a 2,000-year-old mathematical concept. They were honored and given new electronics by AT&T's Dream in Black program, which aims to improve the lives of people of African descent by means of technology.

The incredible adventure started when high school seniors Johnson and Jackson from St. Mary's Academy entered a math competition. The two aspiring mathematicians spent many sleepless nights working on a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem after receiving it as a bonus question. Finally, they developed a proof based on trigonometry, an accomplishment that has garnered the interest of mathematicians and professors.

After disclosing their mathematical discovery to local media, the duo received a lot of attention. The news spread like wildfire, and even Michelle Obama, the former first lady, tweeted her congratulations. Both Johnson and Jackson were shocked and humbled by the praise they received.

Both Jackson and Johnson are excited about their upcoming college experiences; Jackson will attend Xavier University to study pre-pharmacy chemistry, while Johnson plans to study environmental engineering at LSU Ogden Honors College. The aspiring mathematicians are not only studying hard, but also working to perfect and publish their findings. To get their work published in a top mathematics journal, they have to go through the difficult process of converting their calculations to a comprehensive and technically precise format.

Johnson and Jackson attended the Essence Festival, a celebration of Black music and culture, as they adjusted to their newfound fame. The opportunity to experience the lively culture of their hometown through events like Megan Thee Stallion's concerts was greatly appreciated by the couple.
