Burning Tongue and Burning Mouth Syndrome: Causes and Treatment

Burning tongue syndrome (glossodynia or glossopyrosis) is when the sides and/or top surface of the tongue has an intermittent or constant burning sensation present. Yet the overall appearance looks normal. This burning sensation can even extend to the cheeks, lips, and roof of mouth (burning mouth syndrome or oropyrosis).

Treatment is varied as there is no single cause for this condition. Rather, there are several possible causes that usually are all addressed simultaneously.

Ive had BMS off and on for years. I find that nasal allergies are a key player because I can't breathe through my nose and sleep with my mouth open. The fall is the worst. Wow this has happened to me all through childhood especially when waking up. I never told anyone because I didn’t know how to explain it. Later on I was tested for vitamins and was deficient in all of them! I also have mapping tongue syndrome so I changed toothpaste. Very interesting I need to look at my nutrition more closely.

My husband has this since cancer treatment and Gabapentin and ibuprofen help. Also he does coconut oil on his tongue to prevent dryness that makes it worse. My mom has had it occasionally which she swears by castor oil. She just puts oil on it and the heat of her mouth at night works. Castor oil plus heat = healing. Read the book on Edgar Cayce. No dentist will ever recommend tooth-past without fluoride. When I worked with dentist’s and asked what toothpaste to use, they always said “I don’t care what brand you use, as long as it has fluoride in it”. My mouth is very sensitive to minty flavoured toothpaste and I will get blisters and shit if using the typical Colgate’s and what have you. So I use one that doesn’t have an overdose of mint, but still fluoride.
