The problem with soy biofuels

The EU's renewable energy targets currently consider soy biofuels to be a "green" alternative to oil and gas... but this is far from the truth. Biofuels made from soy are some of the worst fuels powering our vehicles today due to the land clearance and deforestation that results from the cultivation of soy, particularly in South America.

On 5 March the World Trade Organization supported the EU's decision to phase out palm oil biofuels from counting towards renewable energy targets due to deforestation concerns. The European Commission now has a massive opportunity to do the same for soy.

With its newfound support from the WTO, the time is now for the EU to say #NotInMyTank and phase out soy biofuels.
