I think that for many years the US gained a great deal of value from their relationship with China. China provided a source of cheap labour and the US was happy to receive the benefits of this situation. It appears that China has grown and matured much faster than the US has anticipated, and the US economy and leadership has weakened, so there is a need to control and weaken China while they still can. Mainland China will now need to take complete control over Taiwan in order to control the US influence in the area.
