We did the paper chain thing on paying off our house! It wrapped around our kitchen...it felt soooo good to take that last chain down last month

Together, my husband & I have 15 small student loans. I put them all in a spreadsheet, from highest to lowest and have been paying them off. We have 7 out of 15 paid off since January and it feels so good!

My husband & I are finally debt free as of last month. Our youngest of three is special needs, so we will never be empty nesters. I just started listening to you in 2024. It's been great for motivation because I wish to be extra careful with our funds for now & the future. (I'm retired. Hubby plans to retire in 2.5 years.) Thank you!

I used to be a big critic of Dave Ramsey, but over the years I realized that despite some technical differences in our beliefs, there are good reasons for Ramsey's different points of view than mine. He's a celebrity; I'm not. He needs to generalize in his position; in mine I can get away with tweaking his principles. Overall, no matter what Ramsey's critics say, Ramsey has the courage to say some stuff nobody else (including many mainstream economists!) have the guts to say. And he, simply put, does much more good than bad.
What matters the most with Ramsey is principles, and principles fit neatly in the context of behavioral psychology. You are what you eat, and what you do to succeed is what you become. To that end, I'd say that the mental reinforcement of getting out of debt seems nice, and it may be the push you need, but never forget that ultimately your freedom from debt needs to lead to STOPPING worrying about money as much as possible. To that end, always work towards a goal of enjoying life, not re-living the negative reinforcement (a term you might only think you understand) of being relieved of debt. Move on to more wholesome things than money and positive reinforcement of achievement, rather than merely being relieved.
(Note: negative reinforcement here means motivating oneself by getting rid of something unpleasant. Positive reinforcement is motivation through attaining desirable things).

As an officer for about 9 years myself… that caller was speaking right to my soul. I want to walk away too. But there are some sweet benefits that are hard to leave behind.

On top of what they concluded with the son who has the student loans. Add the loan value to the emergency fund. If the son fails to make the payments and it’s going to hit the parents then they bail him out to protect themselves.

Let him have the opportunity to learn to pay this off.

John is so right. I am a nurse for mostly Medicaid people, that destroyed their life willingly, knowingly, or both. It makes me hate everybody not trust anyone and have a very Gloom outlook on life

The write in question was examples from my former life to the new truck and the golf membership! On to my next life now with a much more wise husband who cares about my opinions!
