if blackrock or anyone else forked bitcoin to change the maximum supply, then everyone who has "legacy bitcoin" would then also have "blackrock bitcoin". most bitcoin fans would sell their "blackrock bitcoin" to buy more "legacy bitcoin" and then any miners that started moving to "blackrock bitcoin" would move back to "legacy".

This is absolutely in their plans. That's why they worded it the way they did during the formation. In order to do it, they'd have to get a huge portion of the supply (or sway consensus), they'd also need to control/convince the node operators and the miners. No small feat, but it's a non-zero risk.

For a fork to work you have to have devs, miners and exchanges onboard. BCH was the only fork that came close to taking over from BTC and it failed because forks always introduce uncertainty and instability which a majority will reject out of self-interest to protect their investment.
