As usual, great advice!  Being from Oregon, our strawberries tend to have a lot of moister in them.  I've always told the customers to turn the plastic containers over and look for moister, because were there is moister, there is mold.  For those that can get them, Oregon Strawberries have been said to be the sweetest in the world.  I especially like the hood variety best.

I was hoping you'd cover tomatoes! I live in the northeast and our growing season is so short! A lot of tomatoes at the store are so pasty and tasteless and I was hoping there might be some secret to picking (and storing) delicious tomatoes. Leeks would be awesome too! Thank you tons for all your amazing advice!

You look too young to remember what store bought fruit used to taste like in the "old days" before our g'ment decided to sell us out to make things easier for the fruit growers by 1st allowing them to pick and ship green, then loosening up "rules" til what we can buy now has no semblance to fresh fruit at all. There was a time when a market put out a nice "crate" of sweet red plums you could smell their amazing scent as soon as you got in the door. The taste was indescribable. What a terrible shame that this horrific practice has not been stopped. Fruit picked green never really properly ripens...I think they knew that. Also  the markets that have contracts w/growers. They take what they get regardless of its taste, texture & freshness etc. Back in the day the produce managers were like guardian angels. if the stuff didn't pass the taste test (etc) at the back door, the stuff was rejected. We all know what happens to fresh fruit that got frozen & defrosted when a REFER UNIT froze up during delivery. Now they just sell us the mealy, tasteless crap without a pang of conscience. I wish I had a single dollar for every bag of fruit I have had to throw away because of this stupidity.
