I really don't understand this method of evaluating someone's English proficiency.
Of course, if we're talking about a test for an English major or an academic position in literature, it is relevant to expect them to use high-level words and expressions. However, for the general public and even students in other fields, especially STEM, it seems unreasonable.
Overall, I think that current English proficiency evaluation methods don't reflect the practical ability of a person. Instead, they measure how much time someone has spent learning fancy words and complicated structures that will not be used in the real world or even in the academic writings of their fields.
