CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) skips out on her wedding and confesses her love for Mr. Grey (James Spader).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sadomasochism provides the backdrop for a very unusual employer/employee relationship in this very offbeat romantic drama from filmmaker Steven Shainberg. Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a shy young woman, who, after a brief spell in a mental institution, is released in the care of her overprotective mother (Lesley Ann Warren) and hard-drinking father (Stephen McHattie). Hoping to make good on her own, Lee begins looking for a job, and in her free time indulges in her odd habit of inflicting pain upon herself in various ways. Lee is hired as a secretary by E. Edward Grey (James Spader), a grim and ruthlessly efficient attorney who warns her that her work will be both dull and demanding. Lee takes to the job with genuine enthusiasm, and while she's recently acquired a new boyfriend, Peter (Jeremy Davies), she's far more intrigued by Grey's coldly patrician demeanor. While Grey often criticizes Lee, she seems to thrive on his abuse, but one day he crosses a line when he insists upon spanking her after some minor mistake. Lee quite enjoys the treatment, and wants it to continue, but Grey can no longer take pleasure humiliating Lee when he knows that she likes it; he fires her, despite her pleas to be allowed to stay. Finally discovering the key to her sexual and emotional needs, Lee tries to persuade Peter to be rough with her, but he simply doesn't have the taste or talent for it, and Lee soon maps out a last-ditch effort to win back her position with Grey, whatever the cost. Secretary won a special award for "Originality" at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

That fraction of a second when Mr. Grey's face breaks down at 0:58 gets me every time. He's so insecure and vulnerable but he can't let her see, he's tryna be a strong dom. But he needs her. Oh the feels Q.Q

His reaction to her "I want to make love!" is glorious, like twelve different feelings wanting to come out.

Maybe the best onscreen romantic couple of the 2000s.

It's so sick that someone even think about putting Secretary and 50 Shades on the same level when there is a world of difference between them.
Secretary is all about accepting ourselves to be what we are and accept what we like. Even if Grey is a sadist in the bedroom that is not a bad thing if he doesn't really hurt Lee, because she wants to. All the fact about dominating and submission equivalent to dominator=strong and slave=weak is completely idiot if they are the S and the M part of the SM relationship. Because how can the "dominator" be the strong one when he's only doing what the "slave" wants him to do? They both give each other what they wants, so this relationship is absolutely 50-50. Only because one is spanked or tied doesn't mean that have no control or power on the relationship, because he/she is getting all he/she wants.
Grey here needs to have control over Lee because this gives him the feelings to have control over himself while to Lee having Grey giving her orders gives her the feeling to not being responsible for all that doesn't go well in her life. They both develop their own personalities without refusing what they are. And on the contrary, here Lee, the submissive, is the first to accept what she is, to accept herself and her personality and in the relationship she is the one who really holds power until, thanks to her help and love, she gets Grey not to "change out of love for a pretty and innocent girl", but to accept himself, to understand that he is not sick, he's just different.

Perfectly beautiful scene. Their chemistry is off the chart.

If one more damn person mentions that Fifty Shades bullshit, I'm gonna scream. This film is about a relationship, two people connecting in every facet. The other is just fluff.

Legend has it, she's still at that desk, palms facing down.

I realize from reading up on this movie that his last name is Grey and they are in a BDSM relationship...50 shades of grey was much more unoriginal than I thought

This movie is 10 times better than Fifty shades of Grey. Hope more ppl discover it.

50 shades of Grey: Mr Grey being a psychotic douche bag that is constantly hounding the poor woman and demanding everything goes his way
Secretary: Mr Grey kink shaming himself into orbit and having major cold feet about being a Dom while his Sub chases after him to make him accept who he truly is

Ironically, _she_ is dominating _him, _ here😁

I always thought of this film as a romance between two damaged people who found what they needed from each other to make them whole.
I found it one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen.
This film may have been possible with two other actors but I doubt that it would have been better, the chemistry between them both just works, what else is there to say.

He'd be scared out of his mind a woman running into his office in a wedding dress saying I love you. Haha

The heart wants what the heart wants. Some desires are really needs.
