I am no expert on this conflict so correct me if I'm wrong: Taiwan isn't accurate. China claims Taiwan as part of China, but Taiwan claims the same with a different government. Both China and Taiwan officially claim to be the legitimate ruling party of "China" so Taiwan didn't officially announce independence.
From what I heard, later generations of Taiwan now identify more as "Taiwanese" rather than "Chinese". The differences between China and Taiwan grew to the point where an "independent Taiwan" is possible without the claims over China.
