*What is a quasar?*

A quasar, is an extremely bright and energetic astronomical object located at the center of some galaxies. The term "quasar" is short for "quasi-stellar radio source," as they were initially discovered as point-like radio sources. Quasars are among the most luminous and powerful objects in the universe and have played a significant role in our understanding of the cosmos. Here are key characteristics of quasars:

Luminosity: Quasars are incredibly luminous, often outshining entire galaxies that contain hundreds of billions of stars. They emit an enormous amount of energy across a wide range of wavelengths, from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays.

Compact and Distant: Quasars appear as point-like sources of light when observed from Earth, even though they are located at extreme distances. They are typically found at cosmological distances, billions of light-years away from us. This means that we see them as they were when the universe was much younger.

Central Supermassive Black Hole: The energy emitted by quasars is generated by the accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole at their center. As material falls into the black hole's gravitational well, it heats up and emits intense radiation.

Spectral Features: Quasar spectra show distinctive features, including broad emission lines from ionized gas clouds surrounding the central black hole. These lines provide information about the physical conditions and velocities of the gas in the vicinity of the black hole.

Evolutionary History: Quasars are thought to be related to the early stages of galaxy formation. They are most commonly found in regions of the universe where galaxies are still undergoing active formation and growth.

AGN: Quasars are a type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), which includes other objects like Seyfert galaxies and blazars. AGNs are characterized by the presence of an actively accreting supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy.

Cosmic Time Capsules: Because quasars are so bright and visible at vast distances, they serve as "cosmic time capsules." Studying quasars allows astronomers to observe and learn about the conditions and processes in the universe's early epochs.

Discovery and Study: The first quasar was discovered in the 1960s. Since then, thousands of quasars have been identified and studied, contributing to our understanding of black holes, galaxy evolution, and the nature of the early universe.
