This work is the first movement of Charles Marie Widor's fifth symphony for Organ, the last movement of which is the famous Toccata.

The piece is a set of variations on an original theme showing off many characteristics of the organ.

This recording is taken from a recital given on August 7th 2022 at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh on the Reiger Organ.

Many thanks to Assistant Organist Jordan English for his assistance at the console.

Absolutely wonderful performance. I really enjoyed that. I also loved the organ - I wasn't sure if I would like it in 19c French repertoire but I was totally convinced. What a delightful video to find on a Saturday morning!

Wow, what a 1st movement and what a set of variations! I had no idea that something like this was part of Widor's 5th. Very well done.

Brilliant. I haven't heard the organ being played in a long time. Delighted to have found this channel. Thankyou.

Of course everyone knows the Toccata, and it is a fabulous piece which I played on the 5-manual Rushworth at Christ's Hospital in my youth. But this first movement is even more rich in its contrasting colours and moods. I particularly like the organo pleno section in the middle, with full-bodied diapason tone compared to the more flashy reeds used to great effect elsewhere. Thanks Ed, for an amazing performance which got a well-deserved ovation.
